LION’S MANE

Having a sweet flavor similar to crab or lobster, this delicious mushroom provides a great alternative to meat if that’s your thing. Not only does this taste resemble the delectable seafood, but the texture mimics it too. Offering a string-like meat, this mushroom is great for recipes like Lion’s Mane Crab Cakes or Shredded BBQ.

Not only is it a culinary delight, but many argue the health benefits outdo that sweet flavor. Fortunately, this happens to be one of the most widely studied mushrooms in the Western world.

While the Latin name is Hericium erinaceus, it goes by many other names..monkey head mushroom, bearded tooth mushroom, satyr's beard, bearded hedgehog mushroom, the pom pom mushroom as well as the most common, Lion’s Mane.

cognitive support*

Lion’s Mane has been shown to improve brain function in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies*. In one study, subjects with mild cognitive impairment were given four 250 mg tablets of Lion’s Mane 3 times per day, and subsequently showed significant improvement in cognitive function*. [1]

In a 2019 study, participants were given cookies containing Lion’s Mane mushroom for a period of 12 weeks. The results showed improvement in cognitive function and prevention of short-term memory deterioration*. [2]

Nerve growth factor*

Lion’s Mane contains active compounds that stimulate production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). [3

Nerve Growth Factor is involved in the growth, maintenance, and survival of neurons. It also plays a critical role in supporting the immune system and accelerating wound healing.

Mood boosting effects*

Lion’s Mane has also been used for reducing stress and improving mood*.

One study showed Lion’s Mane has the possibility to reduce depression and anxiety*. [4]

Nutrients*

Lion’s Mane mushroom contains bio-active compounds including beta-glucan polysaccharides, hericenones, erinacines, sterols, and other nutrients. Some are water-soluble and some are fat-soluble.

Beta-glucans are water-soluble compounds that can help support the immune system.

Hericenones and erinacines are the compounds identified as being active in promoting Nerve Growth Factor. (Fun fact: the Latin name for Lion’s Mane is Hericium erinaceus).

Gut health*

Lion’s Mane has been traditionally used for digestive issues and gut health*. It has natural antibacterial properties that may help protect the gut from gastric ulcers caused by H. Pylori*. [5]

Improved Sleep*

Lion’s Mane also works by advancing the sleep-wake cycle and decreasing wakefulness during the active phase of sleep (REM). Therefore, Lion’s Mane before bed could be helpful for delayed sleep phase syndrome (6).
